Klop-klop

Ek wonder wie staan by die deur
en klop so aan my hart se seer.
Ek wonder of ek moet oopmaak
en hom innooi in die teer saak.
Miskien moet ek die kans maar waag
want my eie kragte lê bra laag.

want bang is in my ingeleef
maar glo makliker in sleg as goed.
Die Man op die drumpel verbaas my,
ek het nie verwag om Hom hier te kry;
ek het gedink Hy sou van my vergeet
aangesien Hy alles oor my weet.

Hy vra of Hy kan binnekom
en ek nooi Hom in, steeds verstom.
In Sy hande is 'n waterbak
waarmee Hy op Sy knieë neersak.
Hy vra my om rustig terug te leun
wyl Hy my met 'n voetwas seën
en toe ek weer my woorde kry,
vind ek my van my vuil bevry.

Ek kan getuig van veranderinge,
van vreugde, hoop en ander dinge,
van 'n lewens-ommekeer,
van nuut praat en dink en meer.
Maar eintlik wil ek jou net vra
of jy nie dinge het wat pla
en of jy nie ook Sy klop kan hoor?
Maak oop die deur! Begin weer voor.

Seeking God out

When I sleep in God’s embrace,
or look upon His own dear face,
I know that I can be at peace
and that my worrying can cease.

For when I seek His presence out
it matters not who is about
or what the world is up to next,
as I have found the very best.

In His lap I find new strength
to help me go another length,
my sorrow ends and joy’s restored
as God and I come to accord.

But all of this takes discipline
as I reach to find God deep within
the midst of this chaotic life
with distractions plentiful and rife.

I need to seek a quiet space
to find God in this time and place,
I need to make Him a priority
and seek Him out intentionally.

In my Vader se sorg

Ek het my Vader se hart gehoor
toe Hy my met sy minnelied bekoor,
toe Hy my sê Hy ken my naam
en dat Hy Hom nie vir my skaam.

Met my geboorte was Hy daar
saam met ander om die bed geskaar,
het Hy ook oor my vel gevryf,
trots op die kurwes van my lyf.

Hy ken my sit, my staan, my loop
en gee my moedeloosheid hoop,
Hy weet die goed wat ek bedink
en gee my 'n toekoms wat blink wink.

My Vader hoor ook as ek kla
en Hom vir ander dinge vra
as dit wat Hy my nou mee seën
en somtyds kla ek steen en been.

Tog bly Hy steeds getrou aan my

A love story

God woke me up in the morning
just as the new day was dawning
He had a wondrous tale to share
of how He loved all, everywhere.

He walked with me down memory lane
starting with creation all over again,
of how He talked with Adam and Eve
and how their sin broke His heart with grief.

He reminded me of new beginnings
when it seemed as if it were the last innings;
He spoke of Moses, Elijah and more,
of law and prophet and keeping score.

But then His voice turned really low
as He led up to the climax of the show,
for this was when Jesus was introduced
to be beaten, rejected and badly abused.

Yet, His love was never more clearly shown
as when God gave Himself to save His own,
as He bled on that cross for what we had done -
God did not even spare His own Son.

But this was not yet the end of the tale
for God had more mysteries yet to unveil;
His love would not end on a wooden cross
as if Jesus’ death was a defeated loss.

Jesus rose from the grave as He said He would
and that’s when He gave death the boot
He forgave us all and wiped the slate clean
an example of love the world had not seen.

Orphans is not what He would have us be,
He gave His Spirit for our sanctity -
the Spirit would teach us what was God’s way,
teaching from within us, for there He would stay.

Still, we have not reached the conclusion
of a tale that started with creation’s confusion,
for we await the Son’s triumphant return,
an occasion for which we passionately yearn.

You see, this love is not a one-sided one,
coming only from God, the Spirit and Son
No, it reverberates in our human soul
for we love Him too, who made us whole.

Fear vs. Trust

Father, today is like a brand new stage
with a brand new war that I must wage,
but my mind keeps racing to and fro
between the things that I don’t know.

My faith seems weak and frail to me,
as if I’m not loved especially
by the One who made the earth
and is still present at each new birth.

Why do I doubt and fail to believe
as if you had, or could ever deceive
even one of Your children for a single day,
Oh! why can I not keep my fears at bay?

I will choose not to trust how I feel
but rather make one more desperate appeal
that You should hear my frantic plea
and that You’d rush over to assist me.

God came to my bed

During the night God came to my bed
and when He came the illness fled,
the cough that had me up at night
sped away at God’s healing might.

God also came to heal my head
and do the things that He had said,
for somehow I had stopped believing,
given in to thoughts that were deceiving.

He also tended to my tumultuous soul
for contact with others had taken its toll
and He knew how cruel mankind could be,
and had responded to my desperate plea.

God tended to my bruised human shell
with water from His life-giving well
and restored me to who He had made
unwilling to simply let me fade.

Eensgesindheid

Hierdie vers het my laat skrik.
Laat my weer terugkom na my oorspronklike vrae rakende bewyse.

Inner voice

In this life we have a choice
to listen to that inner voice,
or to ignore its wisdom randomly
and follow our hearts more freely.

Yet, that voice will not be still,
not when its message is God’s will,
so we may as well pay more attention
to the things that this voice mentions.

The heart doesn’t always comprehend
the dangers lurking around the bend,
but would merrily go along its way
if the mind fails to make it stay.

That inner voice appeals to the mind,
reminding it of things that bind,
of niceties with immense charm
that covers its deceitful harm.

It’s better to listen to that dialogue,
to let it clear the mental fog,
to take direction and advice,
before we pay too steep a price.

The Sparrow

I have not used this blog to review a book before, yet I have recently read one that forces me to do so. When my brother, Stephan Uys, told me that he was writing a story, it did not surprise me. Since we were kids, visiting the library together, we have both been fond of reading and have often shared our dreams for publishing our own books 'some day'. I simply assumed that 'some day' had finally come for Stephan. When the book was finished, Stephan gave me the proof copy to read and do a final edit. I was blown away. Stephan had always maintained that the book HAD to be written, that it was a story that HAD to be told, and that the message HAD to get out there. He was right. Let me tell you why.
The Sparrow is set against the backdrop of the gospels. This means that every so often a character from these Biblical accounts crosses into the story. However, at its heart, The Sparrow is a fictional storybook. What makes the book an unmissable read, is the fact that is so jam-packed with information that opens up the time and culture of the setting. The reader can not help but walk away from the book with a deeper and clearer understanding of the world of the gospels. But there is so much more to it than simply factual information shared in a fun-to-read fictional novel.
What makes The Sparrow a true literary gem is the tender way in which it brings the message of the New Testament in line with that of the Old. Through subtle nuances, clever rhetoric and believable character growth, the author manages to explain the shift from an Old Testament religion of sacrifice to a New Testament relationship of love. A hint of this is captured in the title of the book, but I would be giving too much of the plot away if I said any more about this, and I do not want to be spoilsport.
In a modern era where I encounter Christians way too often who are grabbing hold of the Old Testament, reintroducing the Mosaic Law, and advocating a Judaic lifestyle, this book comes as a timely answer to many a prayer. It was not written to do so, yet it very effectively explains why we are no longer subject to the law. What makes it brilliant, is the fact that it does so in a very readable story.
If you are interested in purchasing the book in paperback format, you can contact Stephan Uys directly by email isuys.stephan@gmail.com. If you prefer an ebook copy, you can buy it on Amazon by simply clicking on the link for ebook. People not living in South Africa may wish to purchase the paperback version via Amazon as well. You can click on paperback to be directed to the link.
Let me leave you with the summary from the back of the book as well as a short bio of the author:
The Sparrow is a fictional novel set against the backdrop of the Gospels. The story revolves around the lives of two unlikely friends who need to carve out a living for themselves amidst political oppression, religious discord, and flagrant racism. Love and friendship are put to the test when murder sends one friend on a desperate flight to save his own life, only to end up in a situation even more dire than the one he was fleeing.
Readers who love intrigue and suspense will enjoy reading The Sparrow. Prepare to meet a number of Biblical characters in a way you have not done before.
About the author:
Stephan Uys was born in South Africa, where he lives with his family in Benoni, Gauteng. He is happily married to his beautiful wife Mariaan, and God has blessed their marriage with three wonderful children. Stephan is an ordained pastor with the Apostolic Faith Mission Church of South Africa, and holds an honours degree in Theology. He is a practical and systematic preacher with a knack for teaching people how incorporate theological theory into practical living. He has a way of making the Bible come alive to his audience. His first novel reveals that he has a similar skill when writing.

Op 'n sandduin

Neergesit op 'n hoë sandduin,
het ek gewens om te verdwyn,
om in die sandkors weg te raak
tot waar die lewe nie meer traak.

Tog wou die sand net nie meegee
al het ek dit om my weggevee;
uiteindelik was ek te uitgeput
en het moedeloos net daar bly sit.

Toe kom 'n wind en begin so waai
kon ek alleen in verwondering staar.

waarteen ek elke keer moes bots?

My eie gespook het my moeg gemaak
en ek moes eers my gespartel staak,

In God se sorg

It's not good for a man to be alone

Shall we take a step back into paradise,
neither date nor place, I know precise,
but it is where man’s story has begun
and where he and his wife became one

God made the man and he was good
then He gave him all the plants as food
He brought the animals by for him to see
if any could possibly serve as company

Adam had great fun giving each a name
and some of them even became quite tame,
still, none of them seemed to challenge his mind
they quite simply were not of the same kind

This was when God decided to put man to rest
to fashion him someone who would suit him best
This one would not be made from earth’s dust,
but would be sourced from that which man could trust

God took a rib from near the man’s heart
to make him a wife, the same, yet apart
and when man saw the woman God had made,
he recognized her to be a true friend and aid

This was the beginning of true romance
and today we are still given this same chance
to meet the one who’d fit us perfectly
if only we’d be willing to wait patiently

God still has a perfect mate for you today
with whom He would like for you to stay,
but if you don’t trust the roll of the dice,
you should prayerfully ask for God’s advice

There may be a rocky journey in store for you
but God has always proven Himself true,
so the sooner you learn to trust in His will,
the quicker He’d be able to fill your bill

Renewal

I wonder if You would take my hand
and pull me up so I can stand,
and not let go, but keep Your hold
lest I should crumble down or fold.

While You’re at it, why not take my voice,
fill my mouth with words of Your choice
and take hold of my tempestuous tongue
so I can stop saying the things that are wrong.

Perhaps You’d be kind enough to take my heart
and cleanse it from things with which I can’t part
Would You then mind filling it up again
with the things that You care to maintain?

Perhaps Lord, You should simply take me whole,
to keep my wayward parts under Your control
and renew the thought patterns in my mind
so I will learn to love and to be kind.

Comfort Zones

Today I was reminded of the fact that God sometimes expects us to move out of our comfort zones in order to do His will. In fact, we might even be required to deny our very nature in order to do so. It was certainly not in the nature of tempestuous winds to quiet down at Jesus' command. Nor was it in the nature of the sea to turn into a surface that a person could walk on. Which begs the question; have we truly laid ourselves at God's altar? How much are we still tightly holding back, because we consider this aspect of ourselves too sacred to sacrifice? Do we trust God enough to truly believe that we can only find ourselves in Him, that we truly have to give Him control of every aspect of our being; our nature, personality, intellect, dreams, etc.?

Onewe juk

Onewe was ons ingejuk
onder 'n las wat te swaar druk
en elke skuif het seergemaak
waar die las die huid aanraak.

Onewe was ons denke mos,
maar ons kon mekaar nie los
en moes eenvoudig ons sin kry
al sou ons albei daaronder ly.

Onewe juk, onewe las,
ons het eenvoudig nie gepas,
maar koppig het ons voortgegaan
en wou nie rede insien of verstaan.

Onewe mense in gelid
kan slegs molshope versit,
maar berge staan vas voor die see
en beweeg nie eens 'n enkel tree.

Onewe mense kom in pas
en kry by God 'n ligter las,
wat so sag op jou skouer rus,
jy’s bykans nie daarvan bewus.

Onewe enigheid is vals,
byna soos 'n two-step wals;

as almal in een rigting trek.

Judas-groet

'n Enkele opdrag millenia terug
het planete na hulle plekke laat vlug;

Wees rustig en doen dan slegs wat Hy vra;

Huppel dus voort soos 'n sorgvrye kind
en gaan doen die dinge wat jou hand vind;

Learning to love

How far does Your love towards us extend?
I wonder if it knows or has an end.
And why would You even begin to care
about unrighteous man when You are fair?

I look at myself and I wonder why
a God who has never once told a lie
would bother with such a deceitful one,
ever ready to forgive what I’ve done.

I cannot begin to fathom such love
bestowed on a lowly man from above.
I thank You from the bottom of my heart
for always giving me a fresh new start.

I know I do not always do my best,
and sometimes I seem to use too much zest,
but through all of it Your patience prevails,
teaching me anew what true love entails.

Prayer for the lost sheep

Lord, there are so many that I pray for,
people whom I know that You adore.
Many of them seem to have lost their way,
seem to have wandered away, I should say.
I wonder if You could reach them still
and teach them again to seek Your will.
I hope You will not leave it up to them;
don’t trust the source from where their choices stem.

Father, Your Spirit will convince of sin
and He can work directly from within,
so send Your Holy Spirit to convict
and cause them turmoil and inner conflict.
Do not allow them rest or peace of thought
return them to You from whom they were wrought.
You work with endless love and patience -
lay a love-burden on their conscience.

Father, I trust them to Your care today,
Your will be done, in Jesus’ name, I pray.

Perspektief

Wanneer ek my dag met U begin,
Elke dag bring nuwe uitdagings
Dus, gee ek my lewe aan U oor
Gee dat my woorde, dade en my dink

Springs of Life

I went to the river to bathe my soul
I sought the One who made me whole
I knew that He could give me rest
and I would put Him to the test.

He found me in that river wide
and He came closer to my side
for in His hands He held something
that could bring joy for my suffering.

From His pierced hands water flowed
and this water was with life endowed
He gave me some of this to drink
and it would change the way I think.

I never thirsted once again
after I drank from Him who was slain,
but I also emerged completely clean
when once I knew whom I had seen.

I now have waters welling up inside
like a torrential vibrant tide
since the Spirit came to live in me
so others can also drink freely.

Jealousy

Let us talk of jealousy,
to dissect what it could be.
Let us take a closer look
at its tentacles and hooks.

Is there more than just one kind
of jealousy for us to find?
Is one kind healthy and good,
the other evil to the root?

Let us explore its origin
to see where it is all begin.
When we take a look inside,
we find the root of its abide.

This monster’s a self-centred one,
and this is where it’s all begun.
It’s when we put our own selves first,
that we develop jealous thirst.

That’s when human consumption starts;
with its poisoned envy darts,
it aims at what self-interest needs
without considering it greed.

It does not mind to isolate,
or even to manipulate,
to make sure it gets its way
with its morsel of human prey.

But let’s consider what it’s not;
it’s not love at it’s core plot.
It seeks not what the other needs
and doesn’t contain Spirit seeds.

It doesn’t know of sacrifice,
but holds love in a deadly vice.
It doesn’t care whom it destroys
by the evil schemes that it employs.

At it’s core, it speaks of lack,
of things that keep us off the track
of where God wanted us to be,
and clouds the way we think and see.

God made us with the right to choose,
knowing well that He might loose
us in the garden of Eden
where at first it all began.

If God did not use forced control
to keep us in our precast role,
why do we force our will and way
on those we love to make them stay?

Fullness of time

As this morning breaks anew,
grasses covered in fresh dew,
birds are singing in the trees,
blooms are budding ‘tween the leaves.

My eyes rest on this splendour
as I think of my Deliverer,
and of Him coming on a cloud
to gather His beloved crowd.

Will that morning break like this,
filled with joy and peaceful bliss,
or will the storm clouds gather low
to bring the One that all should know?

Be it morning, noon, or night,
I would not wish to miss the sight
when God returns in His full might
to set the wrongs back to right.

I’ll meet Him up there in the sky
and join in the triumphant cry.
Of what awaits I’m ignorant,
I only know He is magnificent.

So, as morning breaks anew,
with grass covered in fresh dew,
I know the task that lies ahead;
I’ll speak life to those who are still dead.

Constant God

Through the sunshine, through the rain,
in my joy and in my pain,
You are my constant, present Companion
and of my cause, You are the Champion.

Through the heartache and the sorrow,
You give me hope for a new tomorrow,
You know my innermost desires
and equip me for all that life requires.

Through the loneliness and turmoil,
You’re the One who never did recoil,
through the upheavals of my soul,
You saw me through and made me whole.

You are a constant present Friend
Whose love simply knows no end,
You are a God Who never fails,
attached to us with blood and nails.

as bewyse teenstrydig met jou staan,

Miskien vind jy hier jou Judaskans

Dalk moet jy jou fokus net verskuif,
so effens verder as jou eie lyf,
want as jy 'n ander Een leer vertrou,

besef nie dis krag wat jou so laag dwing.

Jy sien, daar is 'n kontroversie hier,

Afhanklik

My Vader, hoor my as ek bid,

Vader maak my ook toegerus
en laat my geestelik verfris,
want hierdie stryd is nie teen vlees,
maar teen 'n ander bose gees.

Omgord my dan met U waarheid
en die beskerming van geregtigheid,
klee my voete ook met hoop
om op U vredespad te loop.

Laat my kop dan ook verstaan
dat ek nie langer skuldig staan,
en plaas dan in my hand geloof
om vurige aanslae uit te doof.

Laat U Gees dan my hand optel
om die waarheid oor U te vertel,
en laat my in U waarheid bly,
want daar is liefde volop vir my.

Vader, laat U Gees hul pyn genees,

van Oos na Wes en verder steeds;
want U koninkryk bestaan alreeds!

Plig

Op 'n ry marsjeer ons af,
blink-lyf miere in gelid,

in sorgvrye Godsvertroue,
geniet elke nuwe Goddelike dag,
onstpan rustig in hul God’s behoue.
