Bible Journaling: Numbers 15

Numbers 15 opens with a list of sacrifices that are to be brought to the Lord, once the Israelites settle in Canaan. Then follows some steps to be taken if these regulations were to be neglected. Note how differentiation is made between intentional and unintentional sins/neglect. After this, the people are reminded to always keep the Sabbath. Then the chapter ends with instructions for the Israelites to wear tassels on their clothing, attached with blue cord. This was to serve as a visual reminder to keep God's commands. Being a teacher, I was thrilled with this memory jerker that the people were given and it reminded me of our own visual cues that we use in this modern era, to remind ourselves to do things. Of course, we use sticky notes. For this reason, I included a number of these modern-day sticky notes in my journaling.

This is what the chapter looks like in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I treat the pages with Dala Clear Acrylic Gesso.

When I am ready to start journaling the pages, it looks like this.

I have a number of smaller stamp sets that have the words remember, memory, or reminder on them. I pull all of these out.

A friend had also sent me this beautiful collection of sticky notes from Holland, a couple of years ago. I have been treasuring them, but this seemed an appropriate time to put them to good use.

This is what the sticky notes look like on the inside.

I use Mont Marte Dual Tip Adult Colouring Markers to highlight a favourite passage. It is verses 37-41:
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord. When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the Lord instead of following your own desires and defiling yourselves, as you are prone to do. The tassels will help you remember that you must obey all my commands and be holy to your God. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt that I might be your God. I am the Lord your God!”

I use Chiswick stamp mounts to mount my stamps on and a VersaMagic stamp pad.

To make sure the sticky notes are more permanent than they are designed to be, I attach them with double-sided tape.

Then I stamp onto the sticky notes.

I also stamp a frame onto the page.

Then I stamp a word into the frame.

I do some writing on other words, using Croxley Milky Pens.

I even do some decorative stamping underneath the sticky notes as an added surprise to whoever pages through the Bible.

Then I stamp some symbols related to notes and letters as thematic decorations.

Finally I use blue pens to draw some tassels in the margin. One pen is a Croxley Milky Pen and the other is a Croxley Glitter Gel Pen.

The completed pages look like this.

Bible Journaling: Numbers 14

Numbers 14 is a rather tragic chapter in the lives of the Israelites. After the scouts had come back with their favourable report of the produce of Canaan, they completely discouraged the people by focusing on the physical bulk of the enemy. As a result, the people rebelled and refused to enter the land promised to them by God.  It is small wonder then that God's anger was aroused against them and Moses had to intercede with prayers for the nation. The result was that God would not allow the current generation to reap their promises, but they would have to dwell in the desert for forty years, waiting for the next generation to supplant them, so that THEY could enter into God's rest. When journaling this chapter, I focused on some of the verses that stood out to me, and simply finished off by adding a number of stickers dealing with prayer, as prayer was the key to saving the nation from total annihilation.

The chapter looks like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I treat the page (not the vellum one) with Dala Clear Acrylic Gesso.

Once dry, the pages look like this.

I use an Artline Marker to underline some of the key verses in the chapter.  The first of these is verses 15-16:
Now if you slaughter all these people with a single blow, the nations that have heard of your fame will say, ‘The Lord was not able to bring them into the land he swore to give them, so he killed them in the wilderness.’

I then underline verse 17-18a
“Please, Lord, prove that your power is as great as you have claimed. For you said, ‘The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty.

I next underline verse 28, which teaches us that sometimes what we declare will come over us, although we should guard against finding some sort of spiritual rule in this single passage:
Now tell them this: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very things I heard you say.

Verse 31 is quick to contradict the rule we were tempted to formulate from the previous verse mentioned:
“‘You said your children would be carried off as plunder. Well, I will bring them safely into the land, and they will enjoy what you have despised.

In verses 34-35 we read the following about the punishment God visited upon the Israelites:
“‘Because your men explored the land for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years—a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins. Then you will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy.’ I, the Lord, have spoken! I will certainly do these things to every member of the community who has conspired against me. They will be destroyed here in this wilderness, and here they will die!”

The next couple of verses tells us more about the people's reaction to God's verdict:
“Let’s go,” they said. “We realize that we have sinned, but now we are ready to enter the land the Lord has promised us.”
41 But Moses said, “Why are you now disobeying the Lord’s orders to return to the wilderness? It won’t work.
44 But the people defiantly pushed ahead toward the hill country, even though neither Moses nor the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant left the camp.

I then gather a selection of stickers a friend had given me.

I neatly cut these out and stuck them down in the margins of the page.

I then decided to go back and highlight the verses I had already underlined.

I used Mont Marte Dual Tip Adult Colouring Markers for the purpose of highlighting the verses.

The completed pages looked like this.

Bible Journaling: Numbers 13

Today we read Numbers 13 in my journaling Bible. It is the well-known chapter where Moses sends out the twelve scouts to go and explore the promised land, Canaan. When they come back, they all praise the produce of the land, but only two of them had not become discouraged by the people of the land, Joshua and Caleb. When journaling this chapter, I had to wonder how often I have not missed out on seeing God's promises for my own life fulfilled because I had allowed myself to become discouraged by the influence of the people I surrounded myself with. I kept the journaling very simply, using the shape of the stamp pads to shape the flower petals and drawing in details with markers. I aimed at depicting the beauty of the land with the flowers.

This is what the page looks like in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I leave the pretty velum page as is and treat the left-hand page with Dala Clear Acrylic Gesso.

Once dry, the page looks like this.

I use and Artline marker to underline a verse that speaks to me. The verse is verse 33:
We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”

I use a VersaMagic Stamp pad to shape the petals of the flowers, stamping with the stamp pad itself.

A closer view of the stamping.

Here you can see the shape of the stamp pad more clearly.

I then used a Mont Marte Dual Tip Adult Colouring Marker to draw the vines and leaves between the flowers.

I used a differen colour ink and a sponge dauber to create the centres of the flowers.

Then I filled in some details with a dark pink marker.

The completed page.

Bible Journaling: Numbers 12

Today I get to journal Numbers 12 and what a fun chapter this turned out to do. I insert a page into the Bible, so that I can include a poem I have written on the topic of God speaking to us. I also have a lot of fun with stamps, die-cuts, foiling and more.

Numbers 12 is an interesting chapter for various reasons. In the first place, Moses' siblings criticizes him because of his interracial marriage. God then reaffirms that Moses remains His choice and smites Miriam with malaria (from which she is cured, after Moses interceded for her). The reason why this chapter is such a famous one, though, is because this is the one in which God confirms that when He speaks to Moses, it is "face to face."

The chapter looks like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I treat the pages with Dala Clear Acrylic Gesso.

When I return to the pages, it looks like this.

I colour the illustration in the margin with Mont Marte Dual Tip Colouring Markers and Croxley Metallic Gel Pens.

When I am done, the pages look like this.

I use an Artline Marker to underline some of my favourite passages. The first is found in verse 3 and it speaks of Moses' character:
(Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.)

I also underline God's reply to Miriam and Aaron's complaints, in verses 6b-8:
“If there were prophets among you,
I, the Lord, would reveal myself in visions.
I would speak to them in dreams.
But not with my servant Moses.
Of all my house, he is the one I trust.
I speak to him face to face,
clearly, and not in riddles!
He sees the Lord as he is.
So why were you not afraid
to criticize my servant Moses?”

Then I spritz the pages with water.

I run a Faber-Castell Gelatos stick over the pages.

Then I dab at it with a dry make-up sponge to blend it.

I select a page to use as a tip-in.

I trim it to fit inside the Bible

I measure the page to make sure it fits correctly.

I then edit the font and layout of the poem I wish to include, on the computer, before printing it out on my printer. The poem is titled God still talks to us, by Miekie:
Why would God not talk to me,
be less than He, as God, could be?
Did He not send His Holy Spirit
to stay, and not to merely visit?
With God alive inside this temple,
I’d imagine talking should be ample,
for is this not what He’s always done,
from creation right through to His Son?
If you examine the gifts of the Ghost,
you’ll find that talking occurs the most;
knowledge, wisdom and prophecy
are all meant for communication, you see.

When you love someone the way He does you,
you should not be surprised when they talk to you.

I colour the printed side of the page with the Gelatos stick.

It is dabbed with a damp sponge.

I then use these foiling dies by Couture Creations.

I find paper to cut the die-cuts from.

I select the foil I wish to use and cut it to size.

I place the sandwich inside my Go Cut & Foil Machine.

Then I run the sandwich through the Go Cut & Emboss Machine.

The foiled die-cut with its negative. In the end I used both.

I find another die by Couture Creations to use.

When all the pieces are cut and foiled, I use Dala Craft Glue to glue the pieces to the page.

For the reverse side of the page, I use two die-cuts I find in Art by Marlene's Signature Collection.

I use alphabet clear stamps by W&M to stamp on the page, using a Chiswick stamp block and a VersaMagic ink pad.

I also use embossing powder on the newly stamped words.

I hit the embossing powder with a heat gun.

I use a punch to punch out the number 2.

I also punch out a heart.

I glue the 2 to the heart.

I use double-sided tape to adhere the pieces to the page.

Then I use an Artline marker to draw a border around the page.

I use Washi Tape to adhere the page to the Bible.

I had to come back and reattach the Washi Tape with double-sided tape, a couple of days later.

I then use my Go Foil & Emboss machine to stamp a Gorjuss stamp into the left margin of the Bible, using a Ranger Adirondack ink pad.

The stamped image looked like this.

I coloured the image with Mont Marte markers.

I added more Washi Tape as accents.

The first of the completed pages.

The completed page, when you turn the page.
