Bible Journaling - Exodus 20

Exodus 20 is the very familiar chapter in the Bible that contains the Ten Commandments that God wrote on two stone tablets and handed to Moses. The Inspire Praise Bible already has a beautiful full page illustration of this in its printed pages and I was left with only page to journal on. I opted to tie my journal entry in with Jesus' words in the gospels, when He was asked about the greatest commandment.  In Matthew 22, he answers that it is to love God. He then places a second command next to this, along with a standard - to love others as we love ourselves. Then He explains His statement by clarifying that the whole law and the propets, the Torah, is dependent on these two commandments. I show you how I illustrated this in today's blog.

Exodus 20 looks like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I prepare the pages with a coat of Zellen Clear Gesso.

My pages look like this once the gesso has dried.

I start the colouring process with Sharpies and a Giotto Marker.

I add more colour with the same mediums.

I then inclusde the use of Mont Marte Adult colouring Markers and a ProMarker.

The commandments are coloured with the Mont Marte Markers.

I trace the lettering with my Metallic pens.

I now need to devote my attention to the single empty page I am left with.

I draw a giant heart across the page and colour it with three shades of red, using Derwent Inktense pencils. I do not put too much colour down as these pencils are very intense in pigment and will spread once I paint it with water.

I paint the heart with water and dab away some excess ink with a paper towel. I use a Pentel Aqua Brush to paint with.

I then colour the background green and paint this as well.

Once the illustration has dried, I write Jesus' summarized words in pencil inside the heart and retrace it with a white Faber Castell Pitt pen with a chisel point.

I then trace the writing with a black Faber Castell Pitt pen. This time I use a small point.

The completed layout.
