Bible Journaling - Exodus 20

Exodus 20 is the very familiar chapter in the Bible that contains the Ten Commandments that God wrote on two stone tablets and handed to Moses. The Inspire Praise Bible already has a beautiful full page illustration of this in its printed pages and I was left with only page to journal on. I opted to tie my journal entry in with Jesus' words in the gospels, when He was asked about the greatest commandment.  In Matthew 22, he answers that it is to love God. He then places a second command next to this, along with a standard - to love others as we love ourselves. Then He explains His statement by clarifying that the whole law and the propets, the Torah, is dependent on these two commandments. I show you how I illustrated this in today's blog.

Exodus 20 looks like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I prepare the pages with a coat of Zellen Clear Gesso.

My pages look like this once the gesso has dried.

I start the colouring process with Sharpies and a Giotto Marker.

I add more colour with the same mediums.

I then inclusde the use of Mont Marte Adult colouring Markers and a ProMarker.

The commandments are coloured with the Mont Marte Markers.

I trace the lettering with my Metallic pens.

I now need to devote my attention to the single empty page I am left with.

I draw a giant heart across the page and colour it with three shades of red, using Derwent Inktense pencils. I do not put too much colour down as these pencils are very intense in pigment and will spread once I paint it with water.

I paint the heart with water and dab away some excess ink with a paper towel. I use a Pentel Aqua Brush to paint with.

I then colour the background green and paint this as well.

Once the illustration has dried, I write Jesus' summarized words in pencil inside the heart and retrace it with a white Faber Castell Pitt pen with a chisel point.

I then trace the writing with a black Faber Castell Pitt pen. This time I use a small point.

The completed layout.

Bible Journaling - Exodus 18 & 19

I love the two chapters in today's blog, even though I finally only jounaled one in my Bible. We kick off with Exodus, chapter 18, where we see that Moses' father-in-law gives him some very valuable advice regarding leadership and administration. In modern dialect, he would advise Moses to be less of a control freak and to trust others as well, before he burns himself out. We then move on to chapter 19, where preparations are being made for the people of Israel to meet God. They are instructed to sanctify themselves, and to wash their clothes, for the God they are about to meet is a holy One. Moses is also told to put a barrier around the mountain where God would meet with him, Mt. Sinai, to prevent that which is not holy (people and animals) from breaking through and suffering death as a result. When God makes his presence known, it is in a cloud, accompanied by lightning and smoke. One can not help but come to the conclusion that our sin has created an insurmountable barrier between us and the holy God we serve. Thank God for Jesus, who shed His blood so that we could have redemption and forgiveness. Because of Him, the barrier has been lifted and we can enter into the presence of God. I show you how I journaled this in today's blog.

When I open the Inspire Praise Bible to Exodus 18 and 19, the pages look like this.

I treat the pages with a coat of Zellen Clear Gesso.

Once the pages are dry, they look like this.

I decide to use Derwent Inktense pencils to colour and paint today's illustration.

I start by roughly sketching my concept with an 8H pencil.

I then apply very little colour to the sky, as the Inktense pencils are vey intense in colour and a little will go a long way once I start painting it with water.

I develop the foreground and the mountain, as well as the wooden posts.

Then I add some colour to the washing on the line.

Can you see how the colour just pops and spreads the moment I paint it with water using my Pentel Aqua Brush?

I continue developing the painting, and even had to take colour away in places, using a paper towel. The end product looks like this.

Bible Journaling - Exodus 16 & 17

Exodus 16 and 17 are jam-packed with action. In chapter 16 we encounter the Israelites complaining that they did not have anything to eat out in the wilderness. Already, they had forgotten all about the hardships of Egypt, longing for the abundance of food they enjoyed there. God undertakes to provide for them daily by sending them manna to collect every morning for the duration of their trip. He also sends them a once-off 'gift' of quail, thereby effectively satisfying their need for meat to eat. In chapter 17 the Israelites are attacked and God miraculously saves them, using Joshua as commander of the army. The true miracle of delivery was actually wrought by God, though. As long as Moses kept his hands raised above, the Israelites kept on winning. As he lowered his hands, though, they would start losing the battle. Aaron and Hur came to Moses' assistance, supporting his hands and helping him to keep it raised, until the battle was over. I opted for a rather simple layout when journaling these chapters, making use of dye-cuts and stencils for effect.

Exodus 16 and 17 look like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I coat the pages with Zellen Clear Gesso.

The pages look like this once the gesso has dried.

I use a variety of pens and markers to colour the illustration in the right margin: Sharpie Fine Point Markers, Fountain pens and Mont Marte Adult Colouring Duo Markers.

When I am done, my pages look like this.

I had some lovely dye-cuts of birds in my stash, as well as some strips of denim ribbon, already glued, to use as a margin.

I stuck these down on the left-hand page, along with some silver hearts to fill up the empty spaces. It seemed fitting as these chapters were testimony of God's love towards the Israelites.

I then used a stencil with different bird designs. I selected three of these birds and roughly coloured them with a Derwent Inktense pencil. Without lifting the stencil, I then blended the pencil inside the stencil.

What the pages looked like when I lifted the stencil away.

In order not to obscure the writing, I needed to use elements that would be transparent. I decided to cut some die-cuts from vellum.

I cut the vellum to size so it would fit in my machine and layered the pieces in place.

Then I put the payers through my Sizzix.

It is this easy to cut your own die-cuts with the right equipment.

I used double-sided tape to secure the die-cuts to the Bible.

The finished pages.

Bible Journaling - Exodus 15

Exodus 15 contains the words of a song that Moses taught the Israelites after they were freed from their Egyptian bondage and rescued from the Egyptian pursuit. The chapter ends with the first of many complaints by the Israelites during their journey through the desert. They arrived at a fountain after travelling for three days without water. However, the water is bitter. God intervenes and shows Moses what to do and the water is sweetened. However, this short passage sets the tone for what follows during this journey. I opted to illustrate this chapter with an ornate G-note.

Exodus 15 look like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I prepare the pages with a coat of Zellen Clear Gesso.

Once the gesso is dry, the pages look like this.

I colour the illustration in the left margin with Mont Marte Adult Colouring Duo Markers and a metallic pen.

This is what my pages look like at this stage.

I use an HB pencil to draw a G-note on one page. I then draw piano keys into the curve of the note.

I use a black Faber-Castell Pitt pen to redraw the illustration.

I use the same pen to decorate the note and pages some more.

I then is a Pentel Aqua Brush and Derwent Inktense Blocks to paint the illustration in very subtle hues.

What my layout looks like when I am done.
