Bible Journaling - Exodus 2 & 3

For today's journal entry we will be taking a look at Exodus 2 and 3. These are two swift moving chapters, starting with the birth of Moses, his discovery in the reeds by the Egyptian princess, his actions in Egypt, his flight to Midian, his marriage and settling in a new country, and finally his meeting with God at the burning bush. I love how Moses' mother received compensation for raising her own child. Throughout these two chapters, and the rest of Moses' life, we can see God's protecting and guiding hand in his life. These two chapters lay the foundation for the life of devotion that Moses is called to live.

Exodus 2 and 3 look like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I coat the pages with Zellen Clear Gesso before I start.

I use Metallic pens and a Mont Marte Adult Colouring Duo Marker to colour the illustration in the right margin.

My pages look like this when I am done.

I now break the story down to its three main components and draw a pencil sketch to depict each of these three events.

The first sketch is about how Moses' life was saved amid all of the babies being murdered in Egypt. I drew a baby sleeping in a basket to depict this. I then used Mont Marte Adult Colouring Markers to colour this picture.

The next part of the story sees Moses committing a murder which results in him having to flee Egypt in order to preserve his own life. However, it is during this flight that he meets the girl he will marry. She happens to be the daughter of a priest. This is rather important, because even though Jethro, her father, did not pray to YHVH, he did lay a foundation in Moses for living a life of devotion, that would come to serve him well in years to come. I depict the love story as two halves of a heart coming together.

I then decide that both of the pictures needed to be grounded as they appeared to be floating on the page. This strengthens the idea of foundations that I had been playing with in my mind.

In chapter 3 we read the familiar passage where Moses meets YHVH/God in a burning bush. The miracle of a bush that burns without being consumed by fire, draws his attention. When he nears it, Moses is addressed by God, and is informed that this is a holy God, making even the place where he is standing holy. This encounter sets the tone for all Moses' future encounters with God. Throughout the books of Moses, this concept of holiness will reoccur consistently. It is during this encounter that Moses receives his life's commission and purpose. He will be the one to lead the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt and into the promised land of Canaan, as God had promised their ancestors. But not before the Egyptians had compensated them for the unfair treatment received at their hands.

When I am done, my double page spread looks like this.
