Blog 77 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 1, 2 & 3
Leviticus 1, 2 and 3 deals with various offerings to the Lord. There are a number of things in these chapters that appeal to me, such as how God made provision for the priests in His service and so on. However, the aspects of the chapters that I decided to focus on for the purposes of my journaling, are the offers that had to be burnt on the altar as His part. Repeatedly, the words 'a pleasing aroma to the Lord' features in these chapters. For this reason, I decided to use the image of a bottle of perfume in my illustration. I use a serviette, from which I cut pictures in this Bible entry. I show you (once more) how to decoupage with serviettes inside your Bible.
Blog 78 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 4 & 5
I have been very excited to reach this chapter in my Bible, as this is the first that I would be doing on pages prepped with Dala Clear Gesso. At the time of doing this, the product was not yet available on the market and had been sent to me to test. I was so impressed with the results that I have found it hard to wait for it to become available. Unlike the other mediums I have been using to prep my pages with, Dala Cleas Gesso does not resist the mediums you use on top of it. I will tell you more about this in blogs to come. Today I journal Leviticus 4 and 5 which deals with sin offerings and guilt offerings. I make my own stencils to illustrate the animals to be sacrificed for the various offerings and I also decoupage and stamp on these two pages. And for the first time, I can do this without worries that the products I use will fade or rub off.

I am very excited about today's journal entry, as I got to to test some experimental clear gesso on these pages. A local company has sent me two samples to test before it goes into production and Leviticus 6 is done on one of these test samples. We keep looking at the laws and procedures that God had prescribed for the Israelites to follow, through Moses. I will stick to my norm of illustrating the text, but I also allow myself some leeway to decorate today's pages. I invite you to enjoy the journey with me today.
Blog 80 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 7
Leviticus 7 deals with a number of instructions for bringing offerings that we no longer need to follow as Jesus came as final offer and sacrifice for our guilt and sin. It still makes for interesting reading, as I think it is necessary for us to understand what it was that Jesus took upon Himself and why He did what He did. The chapter deals with guilt offerings, peace offerings, the eating of blood and fat, and how God provided for the priests by allotting them a portion of the offers for food. I chose to depict the guilt as a beaker of water with which to cleanse oneself. I also include a bowl of fruit to indicate God's provision for the priests. I stamped this in black ink and then used red highlights in the stamps to link the pictures back to the shedding of blood that was required to acquire forgiveness.
Blog 81 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 8
Leviticus tells the story of how Aaron and his sons had been ordained for their tasks. This was a ceremonious affair that involved the whole community. I loved how everyone was included and invited to this ceremony and this is what I focused my journaling on. I was equally impressed with how Moses followed God's instructions to the letter, so that we have the repeated words 'just as the Lord had commanded them.' Just as with the previous page, I decide to stick to some very simple stamping for today's blog. In both of these cases I had a beautiful vellum page that already brought colour to the layout and I could therefore keep my journaling very simple.
Blog 82 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 9 & 10
I have been telling you about the experimental test samples of Clear Gesso that I had been given by a local company to test for production. I have already tested both samples vigorously on other papers, but it was now time to test them in my Bible. In today's blog, I test Sample 6. I will be doing the normal Bible study and journaling blog as well, but there will be a slight overlap with the testing procedures. In chapter 9, we see that the priests had now been ordained and were ready to begin their work. Then in Chapter 10, things go horribly wrong as they do not follow procedure. We look at what is meant by complete holiness and dedication in these two chapters.
Blog 83 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 11 & 12
Leviticus 11 deals with food, specifically what animals were to be considered clean to eat, and which ones were not. Chapter 12 deals with purification ceremonies to be performed after childbirth. I opted to focus on the food aspect of the first chapter for my journaling. I opted to decoupage a cheff onto my page and then I stencilled some more food symbols onto the remainder of the page.
Blog 84 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 13
Leviticus 13 deals with how the priests were to identify various skin diseases. As these could be contagious, it was necessary to quarantine an infected person until it could be established that they did not pose a risk of infection to the rest of the community. This could potentially be disastrous to a people who lived in such close proximity to each other, in such arid conditions. I decided to download a couple of pictures from the internet and then printed these on labels so that I could make my own stickers to go with this chapter.
Blog 85 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 14
Leviticus 14 deals with the treatment of skin diseases as well as contaminated houses. We are still talking about a community where people lived on top of each other and where diseases could potentially spread like wildfire. It was therefore important that these be handled in an appropriate manner. Today we are fortunate to have doctors and spcialists as well as specialist treatments for these ailments. I decided to once again print my own stickers from images found on the internet for my journaling purposes. It occurred to me that everyone may not be familiar with the steps required to do this and therefore a large part of this blog guides you step by step through the process of printing your own stickers at home and setting the computer and printer up to do so.
Blog 86 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 15
Leviticus 15 deals with the very uncomfortable topic of bodily discharges. These could make a person unclean and people were warned not to touch such a person. With the knowledge we have of STD's these days, this chapter seems to be years ahead of its time, though I doubt that its first witnesses understood the value of the precautions as we do today. I decided to stick with the medical stickers that I had printed before and added some more laboratory stickers to this as well, for journaling this chapter. It would make me slightly uncomfortable to be more explicit with this chapter in my journaling.
Blog 87 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 16 & 17
I love chapter 16 in Leviticus. It is a chapter that deals with the annual sacrificial lamb. It is the only day in the year when the high priest was allowed to enter the Most Holy place in the temple and to make atonement for the sins of the people. The chapter also tells us that there was a second goat, which were to carry the sins of the people into the desert. The next chapter then deals with the sanctity of blood in which is life, and says that we are forbidden to eat blood. These chapters, especially the first, is a foreshadowing of Christ and the sacrifice He would become for our sins. I opted to use my Go Cut & Emboss machine to cut some die-cuts to journal these pages with. I used a silver cardboard as well as wood-grain one. My elements deal with love (hearts), the aspect of time (annually), the inclusiveness of forgiveness (globe), and the foreshadowing of Christ (cross).
Blog 88 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 18
Leviticus 18 is a chapter that really calls a spade a spade. It is about forbidden sexual practices. The idea here was that God's chosen people were to conduct themselves differently from the nations around them, and be holy, just like their God is holy. I did some simple stencilling and colouring on this page, as well as to cut some die-cut lettering with my Go Cut & Emboss machine. I use a restricted colour palette and allow my own designs to be dictated by those already found in the Inspire Praise Bible.
Blog 89 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 19 & 20
In Leviticus 19, God lays down the law for the Israelites. Literally. It is a chapter filled with rules and regulations which they had to follow, on how to conduct themselves. This chapter is followed by one in which a list of punishments, for foreseen transgressions, are spelled out. I decided to label these two chapters together with the single word 'Purity.' I again use my die-cut machine to cut out the letters and then I stamp some decorations around it. I use a stamp pad to stamp the background and work throughout with a very limited palette. What makes these pages interesting, is that I actually made an error, which turned out much prettier than my original idea. I tell you more about this in the blog.
Blog 90 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 21 & 22
Leviticus 21 and 22 gives a set of instructions and directives for the priests to follow. It is clear, when reading through these chapters, that these were a group of people set apart from the rest. They were held to a higher standard. Chapter 22 concludes with some additional information regarding offerings and sacrifices, before stating the reason for these instructions:
“You must faithfully keep all my commands by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord. 32 Do not bring shame on my holy name, for I will display my holiness among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who makes you holy. 33 It was I who rescued you from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. I am the Lord.”When journaling this page, I use both the Go Foil & Emboss, as well as the Go Cut & Emboss machines.
Blog 91 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 23
Leviticus 23 deals with the feasts that God had appointed to be held. I opted to keep these pages very simple. I stamped the backgrounds with my Ink Stains in Christmas Colours, to link the festivals to the Christian calendar. Then I simply used stamps to embellish the borders of the pages, attempting to link the stamps to the various festivals mentioned in the chapter.
Blog 92 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 24
Leviticus 24 starts off with a passage about the use of pure oil and holy bread in the tabernacle service, reiterating the fact that God is a holy God. Then the chapter moves into a series of punishments for various offences. A number of these punishments take the form of capital punishment. I decided to keep the journaling for this chapter very muted in shades of black and grey. I then added a little bit of rose gold colour to the stamping, with die cut elements. I did not wish to detract from the seriousness of the message contained in this chapter.
Blog 93 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 25
Leviticus 25 is a very interesting chapter in the Bible, because it calls on people to stop relying on their own efforts, and to trust God to provide for them instead. In the first part of the chapter, God introduces the Sabbath Year. During this year, there was to be no planting or harvesting. If the Israelites followed these precepts, then God undertook to provide for them in abundance in the year preceding this year. Then God introduces the Year of Jubilee, to be commemorated every 50th year. In this year the land which God had allocated to each family, should be returned to its rightful owner. A person could only buy someone else's property for a period of time (price determined by the amount of harvests to the next year of Jubilee). This meant that an Israelite could get temporary relief from poverty, without falling into permanent bankruptcy. This coincides with the last part of the chapter which talks about people who had willingly enslaved themselves to others because of financial difficulties. In the year of Jubilee, these people were also to be freed, not only the land. The Inspire Praise Bible has two very charming designs printed in both margins of this chapter and I was left to simply colour these and do some transparent stenciling over the text, for my journaling.
Blog 94 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 26
Leviticus 26 is another one of those chapters in the Bible that I absolutely love. It reads like a contract between God and mankind. The chapter opens with a series of blessings that will absolutely come into being for those who are obedient to God's decrees. However, there are consequences for their actions, if people are to follow their own heads and disobey God. These are listed in the later part of the chapter. The Inspire Praise Bible once again has an awesome illustration filling one whole page of this chapter. I simply coloured this, tinted the background of the pages and added some elegant stenciling and stamping to the right hand page's margin, to complete the journaling for this particular chapter.
Blog 95 - Bible Journaling - Leviticus 27
The last chapter of the book of Leviticus is a rather odd one. It has a list of redemption prices that could be paid to redeem a person, animal or object promised to God. I decided to keep my journaling for this chapter very simple. I use an inkpad to colour the backgrounds of the pages. I then cut some shapes and letters on my Go Cut & Emboss machine to use on the page and tie everything up with a store-bought die-cut that says love. Of course, I also colour the pretty illustration printed in the Inspire Praise Bible.
