Bible Journaling - Genesis 45

Genesis 45 is the chapter I would title the Great Reveal, for it is in this chapter that Joseph finally relinquishes and reveals his identity to his brothers. He then reassures them of his good intentions and that, despite all of the hardships he had suffered, he could still see God's hand and direction in his life. He was placed in Egypt for such a time as this, if I may borrow a line from the book of Esther, much later. He then sends his brothers back home with instructions and provisions for them to bring the rest of the family to Egypt, revealing to them that the famine will last another five years. The Pharaoh extends the same invitation to Joseph's family and the scene is set for the next stage in the history of the nation that would come to be known as the Israelites, after Joseph's father Jacob/Israel. I illustrate this chapter showing the two identities of Joseph as both Israelite as well as Egyptian ruler.

Genesis 45 looks like this in the Inspire Praise Bible.

I coat the pages with Zellen Clear Gesso before I start. I have since been given two bottles of Clear Gesso to pretest, before marketing and manufacturing, which are much superior products, but I am not yet at liberty to disclose more on this topic, though I would advise you to keep your eyes peeled in future blogs, as I am very impressed with the results from one of these test samples.

This is what the page looks like once the gesso has dried.

I use Mont Marte Adult Colouring Duo Markers and Metallic pens to colour the illustration in the right margin.

My page looks like this when I return to it.

I start by drawing a face over the centre of the double page layout.

I will use my Derwent Inktense Blocks to paint this illustration.

I start with the face, which should look the same on both sides of the layout.

I then paint the detail of the Egyptian headdress.

Then I paint the detail of the more modest Israeli headdress.

I then add a strip of golden Washi tape down the side of the Egyptian half of the page. This simply serves to enhance the idea of wealth and opulence on this side of the page.

When I am done, I decide to use my Mont Marte Colour Brush Markers to add more dimension to the illustration, as I find the lines to be too blurred.

What the illustration looked like when I was done with it.
